RBS Six Nations

Event Info

The RBS Six Nations tournament is a true highlight of the international Rugby calender. It is generally seen as the 'European Championship' of Rugby and takes place annually. The venues used are Twickenham (England), Murrayfield (Scotland), Stade de France (France), Stadio Flaminio (Italy), Millennium Stadium (Wales) and Croke Park (Ireland).

Last year the tournament was dominated by Wales who achieved the Grand Slam. In the previous tournaments in recent years, the winners have generally been England, France or Wales. Considering the size of the tournament it is amazing to learn that there was no prize for winning before 1992-1993, when a trophy was introduced for the first time. Ireland are still yet to win the trophy.

Facts

  • A 'Grand Slam' is achieved when one team beats all the other teams in their games.
  • Italy are the only nation not to have won the tournament, although they only joined in 2000.
  • The tournament's previous incarnations include the 'Five Nations' (without Italy) and the 'Home Nations' (without France & Italy).

Stats

  • England has the most Home Nations, Five Nations and Six Nations tournament victories (25)
  • Wales are in second place with 24 victories.
  • Wales were last years winners and won the Grand Slam.

RBS Six Nations Reviews

Scotland v England 25/2/06

4 out of 5

Amazin game but I cant give it five stars because England lost lol! Both teams played really well and to be fair Scotland deserved their win. This was the first 6 nations match I’d been at and I cant recommend it enough. The atmosphere alone is worth the ticket price.

As a Welshman I can say I was VERY happy with the result! Wales played brilliantly and the crowd was amazing. Yeah we'd have had more points if Williams was less greedy but a win is a win. I am defenitely going to try and see more games in 2008. Especially if they end like this one :-D

Italy v Ireland 3/17/2007

My husband is the biggest rugby fan I know and he convinced me to go see Ireland play at the Stadio Flaminio at Rome. I like rugby but before this I'd as rather watch it in a pub on a big telly! I'm a live match convert now! The noise of the crowd, the men in the flesh ;-) and just the whole experience was wow... can't even find the words to describe!

Not sure I had any nails left when this game was over! Even though it was decided on penalties the whole game was so tense. Wales played well but they couldn't stand up to the Scottish power. Can't fault any of the Scottish team's performance but would have been nice to see more points during the game.
