Tom Jones
Born in Wales, Tom Jones has entertained the world since 1965. His highly energetic delivery of his stable of hit songs has made him an international icon.
Early Days
Born the son of a coal miner, Tom Jones' beginnings hardly heralded the future as a pop star that awaited him. In fact, Jones would drop out of school, get married, and start a family all at the age of 16. From there, he made money doing odd jobs such as selling vacuum cleaners door to door. However, Jones would find his calling after joining the local music scene.
In 1964, Jones and a group of musicians teamed with Joe Meek to try and move a demo album. It was nearly a year of frustration and rejected offers before independent radio stations picked up on Jones' exciting and raw take on pop music. Although it might be hard to believe now, Jones' music was considered far too raucous and out of control for most major labels at the time. His biggest hit It's Not Unusual managed to pull in record publishers which led to a signing and regular top 40 appearances by this unlikely star.
That same year, Jones would win the Grammy award for best new artist, sing the title track for a James Bond film, and have at least two more hit singles. It wasn't long before the singer moved his act overseas to the US where he began to regularly play what would eventually become his second home, Las Vegas. He was so popular, he would headline a variety show in 1969 which would last for three seasons.
The 1970s were less exciting for Jones, although he had regular hits to keep him afloat. However, the 80s would see Jones moving back into the spotlight with his touching hit single A Boy From Nowhere winning him both critical and public applause. A cover of Prince's Kiss would lead to more financial success as well as a new record deal. Throughout the rest of the '90s, Tom Jones would find an audiences with innovative duets and covers that brought out a curious public.
Today's Tom Jones
Tom Jones' loyal fans and followers have helped make this Welsh superstar one of the most successful acts in the world. Spending most of the year at the Las Vegas MGM Grand Hotel, Jones performs in the US and internationally every year. His concerts feature a party-like atmosphere and Jones has never stopped having a ball on stage. His most recent album, 24 Hours was a success in the UK.
With yet another number one hit under his belt with the cover of Island in the Streams in 2009, Jones has proved that he's able to still bring in an audience after all these years.
