Early Career

Them Crooked Vultures, the supergroup made up of Josh Homme, John Paul Jones, and Dave Grohl, hardly needs any introduction. Finally playing their first concert together on August 9th, 2009, these world class musicians are taking their show on the road and touring the UK and the US throughout 2009 and 2010.

Long rumored, Them Crooked Vultures as a concept was in the planning stages as early as 2005. Nirvana alumni and Foo Fighter's founder Dave Grohl explicitly stated that the three would be recording together. It is unknown whether any serious recording has taken place, but the three introduced themselves to the world by playing an eighty minute set during Them Crooked Vultures debut appearance in Chicago.

Josh Homme, the lead singer and guitarist for Queens of the Stone Age, is never too far from a collaboration. Having also founded The Eagles of Death Metal and regularly collaborated and produced albums for other hit groups such as Peaches, The Arctic Monkeys, and others, its no shock that he would be a driving force between creating one of the most talked about supergroups in the world.

A frequent collaborator with Dave Grohl, it is no surprise the two found themselves working on a side project together. Grohl has worked with Homme as a guest on several Queens tracks as well as contributing to at least one Eagles of Death Metal track. Grohl is no slouch himself, having worked with Nine Inch Nails, Tenacious D, Prodigy, and other major acts in addition to his work with his own bands. Between the two of them, they've had their fingers in nearly every major rock group of the last decade.

But how does Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones fit into the mix? Although a living legend and part of the brain trust that all but created the heavy metal rock sound of the 70s, a casual observer would think Jones an odd fit with the alternative and heavy sounds usually associated with bands like Queens of the Stone Age. The link exists with Grohl.

In 2005, Jones first collaborated with Grohl on the Foo Fighter's “In Your Honor”, playing mandolin and piano on two tracks. The two formed a working and friendly relationship which led to Jones once again working with the Foo Fighters on several live concerts, including a performance at the Grammy Awards.

Due to Grohl's influence, the three became acquainted and began to seriously discuss creating an album together. What started out as an oft-delayed potential washout soon became more as the project picked up steam in late 2007 and soon became a definite reality in 2008 as the three began to write and practice in seclusion.

In a surprise move, the supergroup announced themselves to the world in July of 2009, creating a website, Twitter accounts, and other social networking tools. Officially attached to the Them Crooked Vultures name, these three enigmatic musicians quickly scheduled a concert. A success, they quickly played the Leeds Music Festival, before quickly moving onto the Reading

Festival the next day.

With a world tour planned, its only a matter of time before these larger than life musicians release an album. With a legion of fans waiting, it can't come soon enough.

Band Members

Most people are probably already familiar with the members of Them Crooked Vultures. Comprised of three of the biggest names in rock, this supergroup has nearly eighty years of music experience between them.

Josh Homme - A true music prodigy, Homme plays guitar, drum, bass, and keyboards in addition to his position as lead singer of Queens of the Stone Age. His first band, Kyuss was a high school band that ended up spanning nearly a decade. After leaving the band, Homme pursued a variety of other musical opportunities before forming Queens of the Stone Age, Homme's career truly began to soar.

Although not an instant success, the group gathered a following with their first album. However, their second album, “Rated R” was a huge success. Today, Queens of the Stone Age remains one of the premier hard rock acts in the world and they continue to tour and record.

Not content with just one band, Homme is also the founder and lead percussionist for Eagles of Death Metal. Despite their name, the band's sound is significantly lighter than the often dark and intense Queens of the Stone Age. A frequent collaborator, Homme regularly records and produces with other top artists.

Dave Grohl

Few performers have had their name attached to so many influential acts as Dave Grohl. Although he was vaulted to worldwide fame as the drummer for the legendary Nirvana, few had any expectation that he would become a front man on his own merits. But expectations are something Grohl often defies, and today he headlines as lead singer and rhythm guitar for the best selling Foo Fighters. With six platinum albums and a slew of awards, the Foo Fighters have become one of the top rock and roll acts in the world.

Grohl has previously worked with Homme when he went into the studio with Queens of the Stone Age. One of the busiest professional musicians out there, Grohl has also played drums and guitar for a variety of acts including Tenacious D, Prodigy, and Nine Inch Nails. His work with Them Crooked Vultures is just another in a long line of major groups this prolific artist has been attached to.

John Paul Jones

The bassist and founding member of Led Zeppelin, John Paul Jones' resume speaks for itself. As a contributor to the Yard Birds, he joined former member Jimmy Page in the group originally called The New Yard Birds which would eventually become the legendary Led Zeppelin.

A bassist of extraordinary skill, Jones helped cultivate the unique rhythm that fans know and love. However, his talents extend beyond just laying down bass lines. Jones is an accomplished pianist and has mastered a variety of string instruments including the mandolin, cello, sitar, and more.

His post Zeppelin career has been busy as well. He's worked as a producer, composer, and studio artist for a variety of acts. His work with the Foo Fighters introduced him to his cohorts in Them Crooked Vultures and led to their collaboration.

Among them, only Grohl has earned himself a Grammy award. He has won multiple rock awards for his time with the Foo Fighters. In addition, Grohl won once for Best Rock Performance while playing with Nirvana. Homme with the Queens of the Stone Age has been nominated four times but failed to pick up a win. Led Zeppelin was notoriously denied a single Grammy win during their performing days, although John Paul Jones did receive a lifetime achievement award from the association in 2005.

The Foo Fighters are the most prolific winners amongst the group. Even the BRIT awards recognized them in 2008 as the Best Foreign Performance.
