The Prodigy

This UK based group of electronic music savants have been pleasing crowds since 1990. With millions of records sold and a dedicated following, The Prodigy has kept fans dancing at concerts and clubs around the world.

Getting Their Start

Liam Howlett had been seriously shopping around his full-length demo album of electronic music with the hopes of finding a record deal. Although it might have seemed unlikely, the early works of this future star had some high quality beats and soon found an audience with dance club's and ravers around the UK. The popularity of Your Love led to some serious playtime with dance fans and other venues where electronic music was common.

Their popularity in the clubs led Howlett to release The Prodigy's first full album, The Experience in 1992. For a techno and rave album, it did amazingly well, charting in the top 20 and earning the band some much deserved critical respect. However, their modest success would soon turn into true blown musical stardom.

In 1994, The Prodigy's second album, Music for the Jilted Generation was released. Combining their classic techno and dance music with some rock and roll stylings, this album rocketed to number one on the UK charts. Featuring dark lyrics and a more aggressive sound than their previous album, Music for the Jilted Generation was dance music for kids who were on the wrong end of a policeman's truncheon more than once in their lives. With a positive review in Rolling Stone, The Prodigy was going global in a big way.

International Success and Infamy

With a following in the UK, the US, Australia, and locations all over the globe, Prodigy was poised to make it in a big way. Their profile only increased with their third album, Fat of the Land. Although the album would see extensive club, radio, and television play as well as find its way into movie soundtracks, things were about to heat up.

One of the album's top singles, Smack My Bitch Up received negative publicity for supposedly glorifying domestic abuse. The band (who simply sampled the lyrics) denied these charges. Rather than simply keep a low profile, the band produced a brilliant but controversial music video for the song. Featuring drug use, violence, and a seedy picture of the club life, the video garnered condemnations and volumes of press.

The Prodigy Today

Today's Prodigy are still “Firestarters”, constantly poking at hornet's nests and mixing up their sound in new and exciting ways. Their most recent album, Invaders Must Die was released in 2009 and featured Dave Grohl on drums. With two hit singles, Invaders Must Die was another in the long line of international successes The Prodigy have accumulated for themselves.
