Depeche Mode

Although born early in the '80s, Depeche Mode has never lost their edge and has remained an influential player on the worldwide music stage. A member of the New Wave movement, Depeche Mode has stayed current through two decades plus of musical change.

Early Years

The band began in 1980 as a joint effort between Vince Clarke and Andrew Fletcher. The pair assembled a band and released the 1981 hit Speak and Spell. Their single New Life was a Top 20 hit and proved that the new band had legs. Soon enough, another single would break into the charts, this time Just Can't Get Enough peaking at number eight on the charts.

Clarke would soon feel alienated by the direction the band was taking. Soon after the release of Speak and Spell, Clarke would leave the band and was replaced by Alan Wilder who would stay with the band through to the 90s. Their follow up album, A Broken Frame would send the band on a world tour and reaching new levels of popularity on a global scale.

Continuing at their breakneck pace, Depeche Mode would release their third album in as many years. Construction Against Time would be the band's first overtly political album, covering issues such as social problems and anti-corporate screeds. This album was once again a success and led to their fourth album, Some Great Reward being released in 1984.

By this time, the band had begun to insinuate itself into a variety of different subcultures. As part of the New Wave movement, it was popular with mod and hip city folks, but they also found themselves the subject of the fascination for the slowly growing goth subculture as well. In the US, they found themselves part of the burgeoning college rock movement . Meanwhile, in mainland Europe, the group were considered to be pop idols and the objects of adoration by screaming teenage girls.

Through the 90s and Today

Throughout the rest of the 80s Depeche Mode would continue to innovate their sound and tour the world. By the 90s, the bands success would only continue to grow as they earned their first gold single and saw their music continue to top the charts. Using synth-pop and other techniques, the band managed to continue to change up their sound and reach new audiences.

After Alan Wilder's departure in 1995, the band continued to tour as a trio. By the 2000s, the bands distinct musical stylings ingratiated themselves with pop-punk, alternative, and rock fans around the world. Their most recent album, Sounds of the Universe was released in April of 2009 and was generally well received. The group continues to tour the world, drawing adoring fans of all ages.
